Chiswick period, Brentford new-build
Hounslow is two boroughs in one for a check-out. Chiswick at the east end is period and protected — the Bedford Park conservation area, often called the first garden suburb, plus Victorian terraces and mansion flats — where clerks mark the sash windows, the cornicing and the high dust. Brentford, next door, is the opposite: the Golden Mile and the riverside have filled with new blocks like Great West Quarter, hundreds of flats where the deposit turns on limescale and glass.
West of there it changes again. Around Hounslow town centre there are more flats and shared houses — renting has climbed fast and the borough is bringing in extra HMO licensing — and a lot of Heathrow shift workers, so the check-out is oven and shared-kitchen grease.
